The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics does not track data center roles separately, so the closest published occupation for a critical facilities engineer is stationary engineers and boiler operators (SOC 51-8021). The national median annual wage for that occupation is $78,620, with the middle 50 percent of earners between roughly $63,160 and $101,150, and the top decile above $125,390.
Those are national figures across every industry that employs stationary engineers — hospitals, manufacturing, universities. Mission-critical environments are a different market, and offers for experienced data center facilities talent routinely land in the upper bands of the distribution.
What pushes an offer above the median
Three factors consistently move compensation. First, the environment: a live hyperscale hall with an uptime SLA is not comparable to a campus boiler plant, and candidates price accordingly. Second, coverage model: roles with on-call rotations and night-shift differentials need a higher base to attract the same person. Third, market: builds in Northern Virginia, Phoenix, and Dallas-Fort Worth compete for the same small pool, which pulls local offers up.
Certifications and vendor training on the specific plant — Schneider, Vertiv, Cummins, the building management system in use — are worth real money because they cut the time until a new hire can stand watch alone.
Budget for the hire, not the median
If you benchmark against the national median you will lose finalists to employers who benchmark against the data center market. Use the government data as the floor, then adjust for environment, coverage, and market before the requisition opens — not after the third declined offer.
